Here comes Comedy 2010!

The Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2010 web site and programme have been launched - and you might notice, if you care to look at the list of all shows, that first on the list is a certain little nerdcore duo show...

Yes, +1 Sword returns for the MICF - and that's not all! We're also doing a late night, improvised adventure show: Dungeon Crawl! This new, three nights only show will feature more of the fantasy role-playing mayhem you can expect in +1 Sword, with guests from around the Festival taking on the challenge to kill the the monsters and steal their stuff. Along the way we'll hear all about their own experiences playing Dungeons & Dragons and everything.

And if you're after more fantasy adventure comedy than even two Shaolin Punk shows can provide, don't forget Tripod's newly renamed musical, Tripod versus the Dragon.

2010 also marks the return of the Melbourne Museum Comedy Tour - as well as more museum-based comedy at lunchtime! In fact there's so much Museum Comedy that it needs it's own web site to keep track of it, so say hello to...er...Museum Comedy!

Tickets will go on sale for all four shows very soon.

If you liked +1 Sword, then you may also enjoy…

Dungeons & Dragons: The Opera - the Kitchen Table Version, by none other than Australian comedy legends Tripod! Yes, Australia's favourite musical comedy trio have cooked up a full-on musical celebrating everything we love about the world's first role-playing game. This is an early version of the show - hence the "kitchen table" sub-title. It's a sort of preview version before it heads to the US for it's proper world premiere, though it sounds like it's still going to be full on. If only +1 Sword were so lucky... Anyway, it's bound to be awesome, so check it out! It runs from November 8 to 11. We'll probably see you there...

We’ve reached the end of the dungeon…

Yes, it's true: +1 Sword has come to the end of it's premiere run in the Melbourne Fringe Festival. But never fear - we'll be back, and you'll hear about it from us right here at Shaolin Punk.

Thanks to everyone who came along to be initiated into the lore of fantasy role-playing; our last couple of nights sold out, and we were blown away by your enthusiasm. Thanks also to Zac and Kirsty for making Caz Reitops Dirty Secrets such a pleasure to perform in - we may yet return to the Vault in the months to come. And we must also give immense thanks to Karin Muiznieks, our mistress of the props, who created Ben's spectacular "eldritch snuggie" and reproduced all those wonderful illustrations from the Monster Manual. You've earned your experience points, Karin!

Finally, a shout out to gaming news podcast All Games Considered, who were kind enough to mention +1 Sword in their September 30th episode. Thanks guys - and yes, we'd love to come do the show at GenCon too. Now if only the organisers would see fit to fly us over there...

+1 Sword is a critical hit!

Okay, maybe we didn't roll a natural 20, but we've certainly had a couple of great reviews.

Richard Watts, arts critic, fellow geek and Man About Town, reckons it provides "plenty of laughs" in his first round of Fringe reviews, and awards us three stars. Meanwhile, over on Buzzcuts, Andrew Erlanger's audio review calls +1 Sword an "hilariously geeky journey", while the punters he interviewed after commented that it was "highly entertaining" and one "laughed so much my jaw hurt". Both point out that no prior knowledge is required to enjoy the frivolity!

So if you feel like taking 3 points of damage to your jaw, get along and see +1 Sword for one of our final three shows this Fringe season. There are still tickets available for all the remaining performances, but it's a small venue so if you want to be sure you don't miss out, we'd encourage you to book via Fringe Tix.

+1 Sword – only +1 week left!

We're halfway through the world premiere* of +1 Sword, and a whole bunch of Melbournian adventure seekers have made it through their first dungeon. There are only four performances left for this run, so if you want to get your geek on, you'd better book some tickets and come join us!

*This is technically true, but it does sound a bit wanky, doesn't it?
