There’s just one week left of +1 Sword, and it’s been a great season so far! You may have already seen the interview with Ben and Richard on The Groggy Squirrel, or heard Ben on either ABC 774′s Evening programme with Derek Guille and Jodie J Hill on Thursday or SYN radio’s Geekyard Shift on Saturday. We’ve also been fortunate enough to receive another great review, this time from Age scribe and blogger John Bailey on his arts review blog, Capital Idea. Oddly enough, his is the first review to really compare us with Tripod Versus The Dragon, and his verdict? “Liked ‘em both!” (As did I, by the way.) You can read the whole thing here.

Dungeon Crawl is also going great guns, with our second show filling up the seats – expect an update on that and our finalised line-up by tomorrow – and has also been reviewed! Liam Pieper of RHUM Reviewer, who also reviewed +1 Sword, called it “very charming and frequently hilarious”, and gave us 9/10! See the full review at RHUM here.

If you’ve left your dungeon adventure until the last minute, we recommend you book for +1 Sword – the last night is all but sold out, and the rest of the week might well fill up! Dungeon Crawl also looks set for a big final night on Wednesday, and we hope to see you there!

Dungeon Crawl begins! +1 Sword continues!

Yes, it’s the second week of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, and a couple more reviews have come in for +1 Sword. The Pun were a bit ambivalent, but rightly awarded +1 cool to the groovy dungeon basement of Caz Reitops Dirty Secrets, while The Enthusiast scored us 7/10 and calls us “energetic, clever and warm”. The goodly folk over at the All Games Considered also spotted our media release, and were kind enough to give us (and fellow D&D comedians Tripod) a mention in their news episode last week; check ‘em out!

We’re also kicking off our late night fantasy adventure show, Dungeon Crawl, which this week features guest comedians Karin Muiznieks (First Against the Wall), Jordan Raskopoulos (Infinity Rock Explosion) and Wil Anderson (Wilful Misconduct)! Come and see these top comedians get their geek on in an improvised dungeon crawling fantasy adventure, 10:30 PM this Wednesday, March 31, at Gertrudes Brown Couch, 30 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy. First week round up

It’s been a big first week for us at the Comedy Festival – and it’s not quite finished! Our first couple of reviews are now online, the first from The Groggy Squirrel. Lisa Clark calls Richard and Ben McKenzie a “a brilliantly inspired comedy team” and the show itself “a comic masterclass” in D&D; the full review is here.

We also cropped up on Rabbit Hole Urban Music (RHUM), who liked the show, it seems, but couldn’t quite let themselves say it… You can read their review here.

And, while +1 Sword continues, we’re also excited to reveal the line-up for the first Dungeon Crawl! Our first party of adventurers will include cabaret superstar Karin Muiznieks (First Against the Wall), the Axis of Awesome’s own Jordan Raskopoulos (Infinity Rock Explosion), host of ABC1′s The Gruen Transfer, Wil Anderson (Wilful Misconduct) and one or two more special guests! It’s shaping up to be an awesome kick-off to our three late night adventures.

Chuffed as I was to find +1 Sword listed as a festival pick in The Age this week (look for the list titled “Laugh? I Nearly Cried” at the end of the article), along with Tripod Versus the Dragon. But the article asked if D&D was the new Twlight, and I can answer that: it’s not. For starters it’s 36 years old, and for seconds, dragons don’t sparkle like a pixie when exposed to sunlight. Well, not unless they’ve covered themselves in the gold and jewels they’ve taken from various tasty adventurers…

Don’t forget tickets are on sale now and we open on Wednesday night at Caz Reitops Dirty Secrets in Collingwood! Come on down and roll a couple of 20s with us.

+1 Sword is a critical hit!

Okay, maybe we didn’t roll a natural 20, but we’ve certainly had a couple of great reviews.

Richard Watts, arts critic, fellow geek and Man About Town, reckons it provides “plenty of laughs” in his first round of Fringe reviews, and awards us three stars. Meanwhile, over on Buzzcuts, Andrew Erlanger’s audio review calls +1 Sword an “hilariously geeky journey”, while the punters he interviewed after commented that it was “highly entertaining” and one “laughed so much my jaw hurt”. Both point out that no prior knowledge is required to enjoy the frivolity!

So if you feel like taking 3 points of damage to your jaw, get along and see +1 Sword for one of our final three shows this Fringe season. There are still tickets available for all the remaining performances, but it’s a small venue so if you want to be sure you don’t miss out, we’d encourage you to book via Fringe Tix.
