Several friends of Shaolin Punk also have shows in the Fringe, and in the interest of promoting the kind of theatre and comedy I like to see, here’s a short list of the things we’ll be trying to see if we have the time. Don’t forget while you’re booking tickets for these shows that it’s only a week until the opening of A Record or an OBE, so be sure to book tickets for us too!

  • Every Film Ever MadeOBE co-star Robert Lloyd, Adam McKenzie and Tegan Higginbotham, better known as The Hound of the Baskervilles, return to the stage to do exactly what it says on the tin. Do you remember every movie ever made?
  • How to Rig an ElectionMr. Al and Mr. Nick are back, accompanied by Bec Hill, and in this political seminar satire they’ll explain exactly how you can win an election without actually requiring a majority of votes.
  • Waiting for the Great Leap Forwardfrom the brains behind Birdhouse, a collection of Fringe and comedy artists including Casey Bennetto of Keating! and the boys of Tripod come together to play protest songs and raise money for Asylum Seekers. One night only – this Friday! – and it should be superb.
  • The House of Anomalous – a collaboration between Jamie Robertson, Jason Geary and Dom Phelan (Anomalous) which they describe as “a surreal and subversive sitcom blended using an original mix of sketch, character and narrative.”

69As the launch of the Fringe Festival and the opening night of A Record or an OBE draw ever closer, it seems only right to show off the flyer for the show, which will appear in a few places around Melbourne very soon. In time-honoured small budget Fringe production tradition, the print version will have on its reverse the flyer for Mr Al and Mr Nick’s new show, How to Rig an Election, which promises to do for elections what OBE will do for The Goodies: show you just how wrong they might get… How to Rig an Election stars and is written by the redoubtable Nick Caddaye, Al Gowing and Bec Hill, all firm friends of mine, and I loved their last show and so encourage you to see this one.

A Record or an OBE Fringe Programme Guide imageThe Fringe Festival Programme has been released! You can now find A Record or an OBE information in print in outlets across Melbourne. The show is entered in the Comedy section – we’re listed on the first Comedy page. Just look for our cunning and evocative image, seen at left, which represents the play’s title.

You can also find details here in the online Fringe Festival programme, where there’s also a link to the online booking system. Enjoy!
